Patient Services

The Division of Allergy and Immunology at the Montreal Children's Hospital is the largest pediatric allergy practice in Canada. We provide expertise in diagnosing and treating a wide variety of childhood allergic and immunologic problems. Through the Allergy Clinic, we can help you understand and better manage the following conditions:

Asthma: We can help diagnose the disease, improve the treatment and determine allergic triggers for this most common pediatric disease.

Food Allergies: We will help determine whether your child does or does not have a food allergy through extensive history taking, appropriate skin testing, and occasionally, through the use of specialized blood testing and food challenges.

Hay Fever: Although this is an extremely common problem, it is nothing to sneeze at! We will help diagnose why your child has an itchy, runny nose at various times during the year, and suggest the most effective treatment. We will also help with most related allergic eye diseases (conjunctivitis).

Chronic Sinusitis: Many young people who suffer from chronic sinus problems, chronic blocked nose or congestion have allergies to substances in their environment (dust mites, pets, molds). A thourough evaluation can help identify these triggers. In addition, we can suggest an optimal treatment for this problem.

Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis): Many patients, especially younger children, who suffer from severe eczema have food allergy. A small number may even be allergic to things in their environment. We can help determine if it is necessary to eliminate foods from your diet or any other possible irritants that may worsen your child's eczema.

In addition, we are pleased to provide services in our Immunology Clinic for the following health problems:

Frequent Bacterial Infections: Blood infections, pneumonia, severe sinusitis or otitis.
Frequent Fungal Infections: Candida, Aspergillus and Severe Thrush.
& other unusual infections.

In the Immunology Clinic, patient histories are thoroughly examined, and when appropriate, blood tests are taken that examine:

• Antibody levels and function
• T-lymphocyte levels and function
• Complement proteins
• Phagocytes and their function

More specialized tests are available if needed

We track the following diseases:

Antibody Deficiencies:

• Common variable immunodeficiency
• IgA deficiency
• Aggammaglobulinemia
& severe combined immune deficiency and other T-cell immune deficiencies.

In addition, we have a day treatment program for infusion of intravenous immunoglobulin to those patients with antibody deficiencies who require this treatment.
